The Tip-Top by Jørgen Gammelgaard — A Lamp Born in Samoa
The Tip-Top is one of Danish design’s most charming origin stories. In the 1960s, Jørgen Gammelgaard was doing consultancy work for the UN in Samoa, where a single horizontal fluorescent tube was his only light source. To improve the quality of light, he tilted the tube 90° to a vertical position and fitted it with a series of plastic “shades” cut to diffuse the glow. The result — six stacked layers of off-white plastic creating a soft, warm atmosphere — became the now-iconic Tip-Top lamp.
This example is in excellent condition with a small scratch on the inside of one shade. The surface finish is glossy, giving it a slightly more refined look than the matt version.
