A Vanishing Tradition in Glazed Ceramic
This exceptional pair of Cochin ware roof tile ornaments depicts armoured warriors astride horses — figures that once crowned the ridges of Vietnamese and Taiwanese temples, warding off evil spirits and honouring ancestral heritage. Dating from the 19th century, they are crafted in the distinctive style of Northern Vietnamese pottery, characterised by vivid multicolour pastel glazes and intricate hand-modelled detail.
Cochin ware (交趾陶, jiāozhǐ táo) is one of Asia’s most celebrated decorative ceramic traditions. Today, only a handful of master artisans in Chiayi, Taiwan still practise the craft, making antique examples of this quality increasingly rare and collectible.
